SAM ELETR, Ph.D., is the founding Chairman of the Board and Chief
Executive Officer of Lynx Therapeutics, Inc. Lynx was formed in 1992 as
a 'spin-off' of Applied Biosystems, Inc. ('ABI'), a manufacturer of
instruments and consumables for life science research and related
applications. Dr. Eletr co-founded ABI, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of
Perkin-Elmer Corporation and served as CEO and Chairman of the Board,
and in various other executive positions at ABI from its inception until
March 1987. Dr. Eletr acted as a consultant to ABI from September 1990
until July 1992, at which time he undertook to assume the leadership of
Lynx. Dr. Eletr received a Master's degree in Physics and a Ph.D. in
Physical Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.
Following post-doctoral research at the CNRS in France and at the
University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, he joined
the staff of the Hewlett-Packard Corporate Research Laboratories where
he headed a group responsible for the Development of Analytical and
Medical Instruments before leaving HP to undertake the formation of ABI. Profile
TWST: Would you give us a quick overview and a little bit of the historyof Lynx just to set the scene for our readers?
Dr. Eletr: Lynx began operations in late 1992. It currently numbers
