RICHARD F. BOWMAN is Executive Vice President, Treasurer and
Chief Financial Officer of First Virginia Banks, Inc. He joined
First Virginia in 1975 as a Staff Auditor and has progressed
within First Virginia as Audit Manager, Assistant General
Auditor, Controller, and has been Chief Financial Officer since
1992. Prior to joining First Virginia he worked in public
accounting for A.M. Pullen & Company and Laventhal and Horwath.
He is a 1972 graduate of the College of William & Mary in
Virginia and is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified
Bank Auditor. Mr. Bowman is a member of the four-person
management committee that is responsible for setting the strategy
and overall management activities of the corporation. As Chief
Financial Officer Mr. Bowman is responsible for all financial
activities of the company, including internal and external
reporting, tax and regulatory filings, mergers and acquisitions,
and investment community relations and services as public
spokesman for the corporation. Mr. Bowman is a member of the
Financial Services Roundtable and has served as an instructor for
courses offered by the American Institute of Banking, the
Conference of State Bank Supervisors and the Federal Reserve. He
has served as an officer and director of numerous community
