John P. McLaughlin was elected a Director of PDL BioPharma, Inc., in October 2008. He has been the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer since December 2008, after the company spun off Facet Biotech Corporation. From November 2008 until the spinoff, he served as a Senior Adviser to the company. He was the CEO and a Director of Anesiva, Inc., formerly known as Corgentech, Inc., a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company, from January 2000 to June 2008. From December 1997 to September 1999, Mr. McLaughlin was President of Tularik Inc., a biopharmaceutical company. From September 1987 to December 1997, he held several senior management positions at Genentech, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, including Executive Vice President and General Counsel. From January 1985 to September 1987, Mr. McLaughlin was a Partner at a Washington, D.C., law firm specializing in food and drug law. Before that, he served as Counsel to various subcommittees in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he drafted numerous measures that became FDA laws. Mr. McLaughlin cofounded and served as Chairman of the board of directors of Eyetech Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company, subsequently bought by OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He cofounded and served as a Director of Peak Surgical, Inc., a privately held medical device company, subsequently purchased by Medtronic, Inc. Mr. McLaughlin serves as a Director of Seattle Genetics, Inc., a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company.
