RICHARD VILLARS, Vice President, Storage Systems Research, is a senior
member of the team of analysts in storage hardware, storage software,
servers and networking that develops IDC's viewpoint on the evolution of
storage networking and storage virtualization. This team delivers market
and technological forecasts for Fibre Channel, iSCSI, FICON and storage
area network years at IDC tracking the emergence of network and storage
technologies as well as advising companies on the impact of networking
on existing IT markets. He launched IDC research efforts on Ethernet,
Fibre Channel, TCP/IP, storage area networks, network management
software and directory services. Mr. Villars is a frequent speaker at
industry and Wall Street conferences. He has testified about the impact
of e-business on small business before the U.S. Senate and spoke about
the influence of B2B on high tech manufacturing supply chains. He is
also co-author of the book eCommerce for Dummies published by Hungry

service from Georgetown University with a concentration in science,

DAVE REINSEL is program director of IDC's storage research. Mr. Reinsel
and his team of analysts provide insight and analysis for IT
professionals, investors, resellers, distributors and manufacturers. His
research team is responsible for delivering forecasts and analyses on
disk storage systems and hard disk drives and component technologies, as
well as for providing quarterly tracking and analysis on numerous
metrics related to these same markets. In addition to his research
responsibilities, Mr. Reinsel provides custom research and consulting
for IDC clients on industry trends, product requirements and marketing
strategies, and speaks at numerous conferences worldwide. Mr. Reinsel
has more than 11 years of experience within the IT industry. He came to
IDC in 2000 from Hutchinson Technology Inc. and quickly established
himself as one of the leading analysts on the hard disk drive industry.
In 2002, Mr. Reinsel published IDC's first ever detailed report on HDD
component technology and in 2003 co-authored the industry's first
extensive report on external drives, as well as an in-depth report that
probed the impact of serial ATA drives and tiered storage on data
centers. Mr. Reinsel earned a bachelor's degree in education in the
field of mathematics from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Profile
TWST: What is going on in the storage marketplace today as you see it atIDC?
Mr. Reinsel: From a storage perspective, one of the key dynamics going
on is a drive for lower-cost storage. That
