MARTIN BARKIN, MD, BScMed, MA, FRCSC, is the President and Chief
Executive Officer of DRAXIS Health Inc., a public, Canadian
pharmaceutical marketing and R&D company. He also serves on the Boards
of Novopharm Biotech Inc. and Bone Care International Inc., and is
Chairman of the Board of the Sunnybrook & Women's College Health
Sciences Centre. Dr. Barkin came to DRAXIS (1992) from KPMG where he
was Partner and National Practice Leader for Health Care (1991-1992).
Before that, he was Deputy Minister of Health for the Province of
Ontario (1987-1991), Secretary of the Premier's Council on Health and
Chair of the Deputies' Cabinet Committee on Social Policy for the
Province of Ontario. He holds the rank of Professor in the Faculty of
Medicine at the University of Toronto in both the Departments of Surgery
(1982-to date) and Health Administration (1984-to date). Dr. Barkin was
President and C.E.O. of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (1984-1987), a
1400-bed teaching and research centre, at which time he was also Vice-
Chair of the Ontario Hospital Association and President of the Ontario
Council of Teaching Hospitals. He was a practicing Urologist, Chief of
the Division of Urology, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (1972-1984),
and a researcher, serving as Project Director at the Research Institute
of the Hospital for Sick Children (1968-1992), and a member of Grants
Review Committees of the Medical Research Council of Canada.
