LEIGH CLIFFORD is the Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Plc. He was born in South Australia in 1947. A Mining Engineer, Mr Clifford is a graduate of Melbourne University with an Honours Degree in Engineering, and a Master of Engineering Science Degree. Mr Clifford joined CRA in 1970 and has held various roles in the coal and metalliferous operations of the Group. In 1994 he was seconded to the RTZ Corporation in London as Mining Director. In March 1996, he was appointed Managing Director of CRA Limited. He has previously been Chairman of Comalco Limited. Mr Clifford is a Director of Rio Tinto Plc, Rio Tinto Limited and Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold. As a consequence of the re-organisation of Rio Tinto Limited announced in March 1997, Mr Clifford was appointed Chief Executive Energy, Rio Tinto and relocated to London in April 1999. Mr Clifford became Chief Executive of Rio Tinto on the retirement of Mr Leon Davis in April 2000. He is married with two daughters. Profile
