JOSEPH V. VUMBACCO was named Chief Executive Officer of Health
Management Associates, Inc., on January 2, 2001. He has been with
HMA for the past five years and has held key responsibilities,
including Chief Operating Officer and Chief Administrative
Officer. He joined the company in January 1996 as Executive Vice
President and was named President in 1997. Before joining HMA,
Mr. Vumbacco was an Executive Vice President of The Turner
Corporation, parent of Turner Construction Company, the leading
general builder in the United States. Mr. Vumbacco had both
extensive operational and staff responsibilities during his
nearly 15 year career with Turner. Prior to that, he served as
Senior Vice President of the F & M Schaefer Corporation and
previously as an attorney with the Wall Street firm of Mudge Rose
Guthrie and Alexander. Mr. Vumbacco received a BA degree from
Bowdoin College and a JD degree from Syracuse University College
of Law, where he was a Research Editor of the Syracuse Law
