JOHN P. MCALISTER III is the President and Chief Executive Officer and a
member of the Board of Directors of Tripos, Inc. He obtained his BS in
Chemistry from Tarleton State College in 1971 and his PhD in
Biochemistry and X-Ray Crystallography from the University of Wisconsin,
Madison, in 1978. After a two year post-doctoral appointment, Dr.
McAlister joined the staff of the Computer Systems Laboratory at
Washington University, St. Louis, in 1980, where he served first as
Assistant Director of the MMS-X National Collaborative Research Program
and then as Research Associate in Computer Science. Dr. McAlister began
working for Tripos in 1982, under contract to supervise software
development for molecular graphics applications. In 1984, he joined
Tripos as Director of Software Research and Development. Upon the
acquisition of Tripos by E&S in 1987, Dr. McAlister was named Vice
President, Research and Development, and in l988 was promoted to
President. On June 1, 1994, the company became independent of Evans &
Sutherland in a spinoff as a publicly quoted corporation with the new
