JAMES C. MAVEL joined Scan-Optics, Inc., in January 1996 as President
and Chief Operating Officer. In December 1996 he was promoted to Chief
Executive Officer and in May 1997 he was elected Chairman of the Board.
From 1991 to December 1995, Mr. Mavel was Vice President and General
Manager of the Imaging Systems Division of Unisys' headquarters in
Plymouth, Michigan. He was responsible for the worldwide imaging and
document processing business unit of Unisys. Prior to that, he was Group
Vice President, Financial Information Systems at National Data
Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia. Earlier in his career, Mr. Mavel held
various positions at Unisys/Burroughs Corporation including Vice
President - Central Region. Mr. Mavel received his Bachelor of Science
degree in Business Administration in 1971 from the University of Maine.
In total, Mr. Mavel has been involved in the information processing
industry for almost 25 years in assignments ranging from system
programming, sales, marketing, product development and general
management. His background in the image processing industry dates back
to 1985 when he was responsible for customer implementation in the check
processing environment. In December 1997 Mr. Mavel was elected to serve
on the Board of Directors of TAWPI, a Boston, Massachusetts-based
charitable education foundation providing educational and professional
development opportunities for individuals engaged in remittance, data
and image capture, forms processing and related emerging technologies. Profile
