IAN F. SMITH is Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of
Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. Mr. Smith joined Vertex in 2001 from
the accounting firm Ernst & Young LLP, where he served as Partner
in their Life Science and Technology Practice. In his career in
the field of finance, Mr. Smith has focused his practice in the
areas of mergers and acquisitions, in-licensing, collaborations,
spinoffs, equity restructuring, financial regulatory agency
reporting and financing strategies. He joined Ernst and Young in
1987 and was named Partner in 1999. Mr. Smith received a BA with
honors in Accounting and Finance from Manchester Metropolitan
University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified
Public Accountants and a member of the Institute of Chartered
