GARY L. SMITH is Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of
Cone Mills Corporation since 1999. He directs the company's overall
financial plans and policies including its long-term financial strategy.
He also directs its treasury, investor relations, budgeting, tax,
accounting and credit functions. Mr. Smith has worked for Cone Mills for
20 years in a number of financial roles of increasing responsibility. He
joined Cone in 1981 as a General Accountant. In 1984, he was named
Senior Financial Analyst and in 1987, Assistant to the Controller. In
1990, Mr. Smith was promoted to Manager of Business Analysis and in
1993, Assistant Controller. In 1996, he assumed the position of
Controller. Mr. Smith is a graduate of the University of North Carolina
at Greensboro, where he also received his MBA. A Certified Public
Accountant, he also graduated from the University of Virginia's
