Thomas Walter Smith, CFA, is Associate Director of U.S. equity research, handles a variety of supervisory functions and manages structured portfolio products. He also has STARs coverage responsibility for companies in the computer hardware industry. He was appointed to this position in May 2008. Previously, Mr. Smith was Deputy Director of Global Equity Research and supported various growth initiatives for Standard & Poor’s global equity research services. He was appointed to this position in September 2005. He served as the first Head of Equities, Nordic Region, and recruited and supervised equity analysts based in Stockholm covering companies in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in 2004 and 2005. Mr. Smith was Director of Information Technology at Standard & Poor’s U.S. equity research services from September 2001 through July 2004. He supervised eight analysts covering companies in the areas of computer software and hardware, communications equipment, semiconductors, contract manufacturing and telecommunications services. Mr. Smith was an Equity Analyst with responsibility for STARs coverage of semiconductor companies. Since joining Standard & Poor’s in 1998, his responsibilities have included coverage of companies in the semiconductor equipment industry and in the financial industry, including STARs coverage of regional banks. Prior to S&P, he served as Political Economist at the Yamaichi Research Institute of Securities and Economics in New York from 1985 to 1997. Mr. Smith is a graduate of Duke University and earned an MALD from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
