J. HAROLD CHANDLER was named the Chairman, President and Chief
Executive Officer of UnumProvident Corporation in November 1999.
He joined Provident Companies, Inc., the predecessor of
UnumProvident Corporation, as its ninth president and chief
executive officer in November 1993. Until that time, his career
had been in the banking industry and, immediately prior to his
selection, he was president of the Mid-Atlantic Banking Group of
NationsBank. Following his completion of graduate school, he was
employed by The Citizens and Southern National Bank of South
Carolina, and went on to become President of the bank in 1987.
Subsequently he served as Senior Executive Vice President and
Corporate Director of Marketing for The Citizens and Southern
Corporation in Atlanta. After the merger of C&S and Sovran
Corporation, he became president of the Mid-Atlantic Banking
Group based in Washington, DC, and continued in this position
after the merger that created NationsBank. Throughout his career,
he has also been active in numerous civic and educational
endeavors having a primary emphasis on economic development and
job growth. In 1998, he was selected by Chief Executive magazine
as one of the Top 100 CEOs in the United States. Profile
