Robert W. Philip

ROBERT W. PHILIP, President and CEO, joined Schnitzer Steel Industries,
Inc. in 1972. In 1984 he became Vice President/General Manager,
responsible for the company’s Metra Steel distribution division. Mr.
Philip became President and a director of the company in March 1991.
Effective January 1, 2002 he was named President and CEO. With his
leadership, the company has engaged in the successful transition to a
publicly held company, completing six major acquisitions of scrap
recycling companies nationally as well as investment of over $150
million in modernization of the company’s steel manufacturing
capabilities. Mr. Philip is a graduate of San Jose State University,
with an undergraduate degree in Business and a graduate degree in
Engineering. Mr. Philip is the current president of the Ferrous Board of
the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR). He also is a member of the
Board of Directors for the Steel Manufacturing Association (SMA) and
serves on the International Trade and Energy Task Force of the Institute
of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). In addition, Mr. Philip currently
serves on a number of charitable and private company boards. He has
also been an active member of Portland State University Foundation
Board, Young Presidents Organization (Y.P.O.) and held various trade
association offices.
