DOUGLAS R. BROWN is Chief Executive Officer of Ionics, Incorporated,
since July 2003 and President since April 1, 2003. From 1985 to 2002,
Mr. Brown worked for Advent International, a global private equity
investment firm with over $5 billion in capital. Mr. Brown served as its
European Managing Director from 1990-1994 and its President and Chief
Executive Officer from 1995 to 2002. From 1976 to 1983, Mr. Brown was
employed by Ionics, Incorporated as a Process Engineer and Product
Manager. He has served on the Ionics Board of Directors since 1996. Mr.
Brown received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master's degree in Business
Administration from Harvard University where he was a Baker Scholar and
