CHARLES JOHN KOCH is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Charter One Financial, Inc., and its wholly owned subsidiary, Charter
One Bank, N.A. He has been a member of the bank's Board of Directors
since 1973 and joined the management team in 1976 as Vice President and
Secretary. He was elected President and Chief Operating Officer in 1980,
President and Chief Executive Officer in 1988 and Chairman, President
and Chief Executive Officer in 1995. In the banking industry, he is
currently on the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of
Cincinnati. He is a past Chairman of the Ohio League of Financial
Institutions and a past President of the Thrift Institutions Advisory
Council to the Federal Reserve Board. Additional past service includes
past Chairman of the National Council of Savings Institutions, now known
as America's Community Bankers. Active in community work, Mr. Koch is
Chairman of the Board of John Carroll University and serves as Trustee
for Case Western Reserve University. He is currently co-Chairman of the
Mayor of Cleveland's Lakefront Advisory Committee, trustee of Cleveland
Tomorrow and Trustee and Treasurer of the Cleveland Roundtable. He
graduated from Lehigh University with a BS degree in Industrial
Engineering and earned a Master's Degree at Loyola College, Baltimore.
Prior to joining the bank, he had various sales executive and management
positions with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Carborundum
